OIC dining hall was transformed with balloons, fairy lights and flags from each country represented within the OIC student body to celebrate Cultural Night.
Students came together to produce a variety of delicious dishes from their own countries including Malaysian curry, Thai dishes and Indonesian desserts, some of which were sold to raise money for charity. Many students also brought snacks and treats in from their home countries including Turkish delight, Iranian snacks and biscuits from Russia. Our OIC chefs joined in too, preparing dishes such as curry, spring rolls and samosas which were requested by the students. The winning dish of the night was Thai Fried Bananas, which proved a firm favourite.
The highlight of the night was the fabulous entertainment in the form of a student MC, to provide comedy, and 2 student acts. The first act was a guitar and vocal duo performing 3 beautiful songs, including 1 in Cantonese. The final act of the evening started with an elegant Indian dance performed by 2 students in traditional clothing, they were then joined by further students who added comedy to the performance and soon various other students had joined, or were pulled into, the dance.
The success of this event was a testament to the student council’s brilliant organisation. This event perfectly showcased not only students pride of their own cultures but their interest in each other’s. The laughter and joy of the evening captures the wonderful close knit community that our students have built here at OIC.
