British universities require evidence of proficiency in English for students whose first language is not English. Their preferred option is IELTS (the International English Language Testing System), which measures ability to communicate in English across all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking.
For international students whose first language is not English, we provide EAP classes (English for Academic Purpose) leading to the IELTS qualification. EAP classes are usually taught in small groups of up to five or by individual tuition for students who require the qualification quickly. Classes run weekly throughout the term and students can take EAP classes until they have achieved their required IELTS test score.
All prospective students of the college will need sufficient levels of English, not only to satisfy CAS stipulations (required for Visa students) but also to be able to cope with their chosen study programmes. This will require a suitable IELTS score or Oxford English Placement Test score, depending on the age of the student. Upon arrival at the college, all students sit an English literacy test as well as a numeracy test as part of their induction at the college.
