The City of Oxford
The site of the oldest English-speaking university in the world,
the city of Oxford has been a centre of education for more than
800 years.
The University of Oxford is one of the world's leading universities,
closely associated with numerous international writers, scholars,
scientists, politicians and religious leaders. Twenty-five British
prime ministers were educated here, as well as five kings, 40
Nobel Prize winners, and nine current holders of the Order of
Merit.
The Oxford English Dictionary, first published in 1928, consolidated
Oxford 's close links with the English language. The city is
now a centre for learners of English at all levels.
Oxford has more than 20 museums and galleries, five theatres,
and numerous cafés and restaurants. All tastes in music
are catered for, from organ sonatas to hip hop, at venues throughout
the city. |
