Six of our Year 13 Physics and Engineering pathway students had the rare opportunity to attend an exclusive event at Wolfson College, following a direct invitation from the Wolfson Engineering Society. The lecture, titled “You Are Made of Star Stuff,” was delivered by one of the most influential astrophysicists of our time — Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell.
This special visit offered students a world-class academic experience beyond the classroom, reflecting OIC’s commitment to providing Excellence Evolved and to designing future-focused pathways that connect learners with pioneering thinkers and real-world opportunities.
Held in the Leonard Wolfson Auditorium, the lecture explored some of the most profound themes in modern astronomy:
Professor Bell Burnell, whose work has shaped entire fields of astrophysics, shared insights from a career that spans groundbreaking research, global leadership roles, and decades of advancing scientific understanding.
For our students, hearing from the very scientist who first identified pulsars — one of the most significant discoveries in 20th-century astronomy — was nothing short of inspirational.
This event aligns closely with OIC’s mission to prepare ambitious students for the world’s most competitive universities and emerging global industries. By participating in academic events within the University of Oxford, students gain:
Such experiences support our pathway ethos: Futures, Engineered. They help students build exceptional portfolios that demonstrate curiosity, depth, and engagement with real scientific discourse.
Our attending Year 13 students described the lecture as “inspiring,” “eye-opening,” and “a privilege.” For several, it affirmed their intention to pursue physics or engineering at university; for others, it sparked new interest in astrophysics and the broader scientific community.
We are grateful to the Wolfson Engineering Society for extending this invitation and for creating a welcoming environment for young scientists. Opportunities like this deepen OIC’s connection to Oxford’s academic landscape and offer our students a glimpse into the world they aspire to join.
Events such as this remind us that at OIC, education extends far beyond textbooks. We bring our students into spaces where ideas evolve, discoveries unfold, and pioneers share their journeys. It is in these moments that ambition is ignited — and futures are shaped.
