Peter’s dedication to science has taken him on expeditions to the Ecuadorian Andes, where he catalogued and collected species of flora (some specimens of which are today kept at the Kew Gardens Herbarium), and to the Ethiopian Highlands, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, Borneo, and sub-Saharan Africa, where he led students on World Challenge Expeditions.
From an early age, Peter developed his passion for observing, drawing and learning about all aspects of natural history. As a teacher for more than three decades, Peter has been sharing his biology expertise and enthusiasm with students in the UK, Botswana, Spain, Portugal and Kazakhstan.
Since joining OIC in 2024, Peter has become the school’s go-to source for topics related to ecology, natural history, plants and wildlife. Peter draws on his own fieldwork experience to help students deepen their scientific knowledge, whether embarking on the annual ecology field trip or guiding EPQ candidates to complete their dissertations with success.
Peter holds a BSc (Hons) in Botany from University College of North Wales, Bangor, and a PGCE (Secondary – Biology, with PE) from Bath University. In addition, Peter has coaching qualifications in tennis, football, rugby, cricket, swimming and athletics.
At OIC, Peter also leads the Art Club for Year 11. In his spare time, Peter enjoys drawing and other creative pursuits, including playing and teaching marimba – an interest he developed while in Botswana.
Peter’s advice to students is to follow their strengths: “Whatever you are best at is what you are most likely to enjoy doing. It is also likely that, because you are good at it, your skills will be valued, and you will be able to be paid to do it in the future!”
