Budding OIC medics enjoyed the Mini Med Programme, hosted by SGU School of Medicine

Hosted by St George's University, School of Medicine and in collaboration with Northumbria University, the Mini Med programme provided an eye-opening exploration of healthcare and medical education for our Oxford International College students

During our post exam activities, I had the privilege of accompanying a group of enthusiastic students on a captivating journey through the fascinating world of medicine. Hosted by SGU School of Medicine in collaboration with Northumbria University, the Mini Med programme provided an eye-opening exploration of healthcare and medical education.

Dr. James Coey led an engaging session on the intricacies of the human body. From bones to organs, our students gained valuable insights into the foundation of medical knowledge. He emphasised the critical role of effective communication in healthcare, encouraging students to practice active listening, empathy, and bedside manner—a skill set that transcends A-level textbooks.

Armed with stethoscopes, our future doctors learned how to measure blood pressure accurately. The tension in the room was palpable as they took turns practicing on real patients.Students were also guided through the basics of ultrasound imaging. They marvelled at the technology and its diagnostic capabilities. Some even discovered hidden talents as amateur sonographers!

Dr. Kristna Thompson delved into the ethical dilemmas faced by healthcare professionals. Students grappled with scenarios involving patient autonomy, confidentiality, and end-of-life decisions.

The program concluded with an outstanding medical ethics debate, providing a sense of purpose and inspiration.

As these aspiring doctors left the Mini Med event, they carried with them not only newfound knowledge but also a deeper appreciation for the art and science of medicine.

Special thanks to Lily Phommarack and the entire team at SGU and Northumbria University for having Oxford International students.

Let’s celebrate these bright minds and their commitment to healing!
