Building the Future: Robotics at OIC

Robotics in Action - Robotics in Action

Students at Oxford International College are putting their engineering and problem-solving skills to the test in our Robotics Elective, where two teams are competing to design and build the best robotic loader.

The challenge is simple in theory but much more complex in practice: design a robot capable of carrying heavy loads, either through remote control or by operating fully autonomously.

Working in teams, students are exploring different designs, testing ideas and finding creative solutions to the engineering challenges they encounter along the way.

From Prototype to Full-Size Robot

Before tackling their final machines, students are currently developing smaller prototypes, allowing them to experiment with different mechanisms, identify potential problems and refine their designs.

Throughout the project, they are developing a range of practical STEM skills, including coding, programming microcontrollers and 3D design. They are also learning how different components work together to create a functioning robotic system.

Our Innovation Lab provides the ideal environment for this hands-on learning, giving students access to specialist equipment and technology to bring their ideas to life.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

While there may be a competitive element, the Robotics Elective is about much more than building the strongest machine.

Students are learning to collaborate, think critically, solve problems and adapt when things don't go to plan. From an initial idea to a working prototype, every stage encourages them to apply scientific and mathematical knowledge to real engineering challenges.

The elective also offers valuable experience for students interested in pursuing Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science and related STEM subjects at university.

With prototypes already taking shape, the next challenge will be turning their smaller designs into full-size robotic loaders.

We look forward to seeing what both teams create and which design comes out on top!
