OIC Welcomes the Year of the Snake

OIC Welcomes the Year of the Snake - Lunar New Year
Celebrating Culture, Community, and New Beginnings
The Oxford International College (OIC) community is abuzz with excitement as it prepares to bid farewell to the Year of the Dragon and welcome the Year of the Snake. The College is fully immersed in Lunar New Year festivities, with vibrant lanterns and decorations adorning teaching and boarding sites, setting the stage for a week filled with celebration, reflection, and cultural appreciation.

Earlier today, Director of Boarding Kieran Jones hosted a special Lunar New Year assembly, providing students with insights into the history, traditions, and cultural significance of the festival. Kieran shared the symbolism behind the Lunar New Year and offered a detailed preview of the exciting events planned to bring the OIC community together during this festive time.

The celebrations will feature a Lunar New Year Lunch on Tuesday, January 28th, served across all sites, including London Place, Threeways House and Thames Street. Students can look forward to a delicious menu inspired by traditional dishes, marking a culinary highlight of the week. (Special shout out to our fantastic catering team for working alongside the Student Council to produce these dishes).

For those seeking a bit of competition, the Mahjong Tournament is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Running from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM across multiple venues, it offers a chance for students from different year groups to showcase their skills:

  • Monday: Alfred Street – GCSE Year – F1
  • Tuesday: London Place – Year 12 – B6
  • Wednesday: Threeways House – Year 13 – F8

Ping pong enthusiasts can participate in the Red Envelope Challenge, testing their skills for a chance to win lucky envelopes. These exciting challenges will take place during breaks throughout the week.

Additionally, students can embrace their creative side with Red Lantern Making, an activity happening in common areas all week. Instructions and materials will be provided, allowing everyone to craft their own lanterns to add to the festive atmosphere.

Reflecting the spirit of generosity and community, the College encourages students and staff to donate to the local food bank, highlighting the importance of thinking of others during this auspicious time. This has been the brainchild of Deputy Head Girl, Mej, Year 13.

With a blend of cultural traditions, engaging activities, and delicious food, OIC’s Lunar New Year celebrations promise to bring joy and togetherness to the entire community. Happy New Year to all!
