Orators in Action: Oxford International College Shines in Prestigious Public Speaking Contest - ESU Churchill Public Speaking Competition
Oxford International College Shines in Prestigious Public Speaking Contest
Oxford International College is proud to announce that our Year 11 students, Jianne, Grace, and Yeva, have successfully advanced to the second round of the ESU-Churchill Public Speaking Competition. This prestigious competition, renowned for fostering oracy skills, critical thinking, and teamwork, offers students a platform to refine their public speaking abilities and engage with thought-provoking topics.

In Round Two, the team competes against some of the region's finest young orators. Each heat features challenging pairings where speakers, chairpersons, and questioners collaborate with peers from other schools. The format encourages not only eloquence but also adaptability and quick thinking.

The Benefits of Participation

Through this competition, students gain invaluable skills, including:

  • Confidence in Public Speaking: Delivering a compelling five-minute speech on topics such as those provided in the competition's *Topic List Twelve* encourages students to articulate their ideas clearly and persuasively.
  • Critical Thinking: Crafting arguments and responding to challenging questions enhances analytical skills.
  • Collaboration: Working with peers from other schools fosters teamwork and the ability to adapt to diverse perspectives.

Competition Highlights

Round Two involves an intricate process where the chairperson, speaker, and questioner play pivotal roles. The chair introduces the speaker and manages proceedings, the speaker delivers their prepared argument, and the questioner challenges their assertions with probing queries. Judges evaluate the performance of all roles to select the two top-performing teams advancing to the Regional Final.

Topics to Inspire Debate

Participants explore stimulating subjects, including the moral implications of intervention in authoritarian nations and the role of education in addressing addiction. These topics, like "Borders do not separate people, they separate ideas" and the timeless reflections of Rosa Parks, ignite intellectual engagement and meaningful dialogue.

We are immensely proud of Jianne, Grace, and Yeva for their dedication and achievements in this competition. Their journey is a testament to the power of hard work and collaboration. Best of luck in the next round, and may their voices continue to inspire!
