Artificial intelligence introduces a fundamentally different risk landscape. Unlike earlier technologies, AI can generate content, simulate authority and personalise interactions at scale.
Students can now produce essays, images and conversations instantly. While this creates opportunities, it also introduces concerns around academic integrity, pressure to perform and over-reliance on automated thinking. Without guidance, students may disengage from the learning process itself.
At the same time, many AI platforms collect and process user input. Students may unknowingly share personal or sensitive information, creating long-term risks related to privacy and digital identity.
The rise of deepfakes and synthetic media further complicates safeguarding. Highly convincing manipulated content increases the risk of bullying, reputational harm and misinformation, while making incidents harder to detect.
AI also introduces new pathways for influence and manipulation. Personalised interactions can appear trustworthy, particularly to vulnerable students, blurring boundaries and shaping behaviour in subtle ways.

Our approach is proactive. We anticipate emerging risks, evaluate technologies carefully and ensure that students are guided in how to use AI safely and effectively. Every tool is assessed through the lens of privacy, security, age suitability and educational value.
Age-appropriate access is central to this approach. Younger students operate within structured, supervised environments, while older students are gradually given more autonomy alongside clear expectations around responsibility, consent and boundaries.
We also place strong emphasis on monitoring and reporting. Students are encouraged to raise concerns, and staff respond with care and clarity. Safeguarding is not a single policy, but a culture embedded across the school.
The most effective safeguarding response to AI is education.
Students need more than restrictions—they need the knowledge and confidence to navigate digital environments independently. This includes understanding that AI systems can produce errors, bias and misinformation, and that persuasive language does not guarantee accuracy.

The risks associated with artificial intelligence are real—but they are manageable.
