Cells Under the Microscope

During the session, students prepared and examined onion cells under the microscope, giving them the opportunity to observe cell structures at a scale that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

As well as identifying key features of the cells, students learned how to accurately measure their size using an eyepiece graticule and stage micrometer. Before taking their measurements, they first had to calibrate the microscope, developing an understanding of how scientists ensure their observations and measurements are accurate.

The practical gave students the opportunity to apply their classroom learning while developing important laboratory skills, including microscope use, calibration, observation and measurement.

It was a valuable introduction to working at a microscopic scale and a chance for students to see the cell structures they have been studying in action.
