What Happens in an Oxbridge Interview? Myths, Expectations and Expert Advice

Oxbridge Interview Preparation: Expert Tips & Advice | OIC - Oxbridge Interview Preparation
For ambitious students aspiring to Oxford, Cambridge and other world-leading universities, the interview can be one of the most challenging stages of the admissions process. But what are admissions tutors really looking for, and how can students prepare?
What Do Oxford and Cambridge Look for at Interview?

Oxbridge interviews are academic conversations designed to explore how students think, rather than simply what they know.
Typically lasting 20–30 minutes, interviews assess intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, problem-solving and enthusiasm for a chosen subject.
Students might be asked to discuss their A Level studies, explore unfamiliar concepts or explain their reasoning through challenging questions.

The key? It's not always about getting the right answer, but demonstrating how you approach a problem.

Common Oxbridge Interview Myths
Myth 1: You must know every answer.
Interviewers want to see how students approach unfamiliar problems, not just recall facts.
Myth 2: Interviews are designed to catch you out.
Questions are challenging, but their purpose is to assess academic potential and independent thinking.
Myth 3: Rehearsed answers guarantee success.
Authentic academic discussion, intellectual flexibility and a willingness to reconsider ideas are far more valuable.
How Can Students Prepare for Oxbridge Interviews?

Effective preparation goes beyond academic achievement. Students should understand their chosen course, explore wider reading, practise discussing complex ideas and experience realistic mock interviews.

At Oxford International College (OIC), university preparation is embedded into the student experience.

Through our personalised Global Strategic Pathways, students benefit from specialist University Pathway Advisors, admissions test preparation, weekly one-to-one guidance and multiple rounds of mock interviews.
