The Art of Debate: The Hot-Air Balloon Challenge

The Art of Debate - The Art of Debate

Twenty students at Oxford International College (OIC) put their public speaking, critical thinking and persuasion skills to the test during an imaginative challenge in the College's new Debating Elective. With a sinking hot-air balloon, a collection of mystery characters and just minutes to prepare, students discovered what it really takes to construct a convincing argument.

The activity formed part of OIC's wider elective programme, designed to encourage students to explore new interests, develop valuable skills and challenge themselves beyond their academic studies.

A Debate with a Difference

The scenario was simple, but the decisions were far from easy. Students were asked to imagine themselves aboard a hot-air balloon that was rapidly losing altitude. There was just one problem: not everyone could remain on board.

Working in pairs, students selected mystery character cards featuring a variety of personalities, from internationally recognised celebrities to fictional heroes. Their task was to convince the rest of the group that their assigned character deserved to stay in the balloon.

With just five minutes to prepare, no electronic devices and only a pen and paper, each pair had to develop a compelling argument before delivering a two-minute speech to their peers.

The challenge encouraged students to think creatively, respond under pressure and consider how best to communicate their ideas to an audience.

Learning the Art of Persuasion

To help structure their speeches, students were introduced to the PEEL method: Point, Explanation, Example and Link.

This approach encouraged them to move beyond simply expressing an opinion, instead building logical arguments supported by clear reasoning and relevant examples.

An equally important lesson was understanding the difference between challenging someone's argument and criticising the individual presenting it.

Throughout the session, students were encouraged to listen respectfully, question ideas constructively and respond thoughtfully to opposing viewpoints.

Every one of the 20 students stepped forward to deliver their speech from the imaginary balloon, demonstrating confidence and a willingness to take on the challenge.

Who Made the Final Cut?

After a series of entertaining speeches and some lively discussion, it was time for the students to decide who would remain aboard.

Following a group vote, Elon Musk and MrBeast were politely asked to leave the balloon, bringing the imaginative exercise to a memorable conclusion.

While the scenario provided plenty of laughter, the skills developed throughout the activity were anything but imaginary.

Students practised public speaking, logical reasoning, persuasive communication, active listening and teamwork, all while building the confidence to express their ideas in front of others.

Building Confidence Beyond the Classroom

At OIC, our electives provide opportunities for students to develop skills that complement their academic learning and support their future university ambitions.

Debating is particularly valuable in helping students articulate complex ideas, evaluate different perspectives and communicate confidently, skills that are relevant across a wide range of university subjects and future careers.

Whether preparing for university interviews, participating in academic discussions or presenting research, the ability to construct and defend an argument is an important part of students' personal and intellectual development.

Our new Debating Elective is already off to an engaging start, demonstrating that some of the most valuable learning experiences begin with a little imagination, a challenging question and the confidence to speak up.
